What are some commonly forgot estate updates?

| Aug 21, 2018 | Post-divorce Estate Planning |

After a divorce, you probably knew to update your will and to make sure your beneficiaries on accounts were changed. However, there are a few other things you should also do as part of your estate planning updates after you have ended a marriage in Ohio.

Forbes reminds you that if you have a power of attorney, it may need changed. Your ex-spouse is probably listed on it, so you will want to change that to someone else. Another change is with emergency contacts and your health care proxy. Both of these often have the spouse listed, which you will want to change as well.

You may also have had things you could not change until the divorce is final, such as a beneficiary of a retirement account. Now is the time to handle those things as well. You may also want to talk with your employer to be sure any paperwork is updated there, too.

Don’t forget about smaller things, either, such as school paperwork for your children. You may need to have copies of your divorce papers to make these changes and some of the other ones, so make sure you have those copies ready before you try to make changes.

It is important that you make all the updates to ensure that if something happens to you, your ex-spouse no longer has any claim. If you forget to update something and your ex-spouse is still listed, it could cause issues for your children or other family members. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
