What Do I Need To Know About Meeting With A Family Law Attorney For The First Time?
We recognize that divorce and family law matters can be emotional and stressful. We do not expect you to have all your ducks in a row at the very start of the process. If we need you to bring any specific documents or information for your meeting, our staff will let you know ahead of time.
If you do want to get a head start on preparing, here are some steps you can take:
Gather all financial documents: Financial issues are often at the core of family law matters, so having documents like bank statements, investment account statements or mortgage agreements handy can be beneficial.
Gather all existing legal documents: If you have already gone through a legal process related to your case, you may want to gather any existing legal documents such as child custody orders.
Notes about what has transpired so far: Writing down everything that has occurred and the names of any other people involved can be helpful so you do not have to recall it on the spur of the moment.
Your goals: Understanding exactly what you want to achieve in your family law case is critical, so you want your lawyer to be on the same page from the very start.
Questions for your lawyer: We know that this is all likely new to you, so questions are expected. Feel free to write them down ahead of time so you do not forget any when you are meeting with us. We are happy to make sure you have all the information you need to make informed decisions about your case.
