How to plan a summer trip with your kids after divorce

On Behalf of | Jun 3, 2019 | Child Custody |

Just because you go through a divorce doesn’t mean you should forget about all the fun things in life. For example, going on a summer vacation can be one of the most enjoyable times of the year.

Planning a summer trip with your kids after divorce is easier said than done, as your ex-spouse may attempt to get in the way.

There are many steps you can take to protect your legal rights in Ohio and ensure that you and your kids take the trip you’ve been dreaming of.

  • Discuss the details with your ex: It’s not always easy to do this, especially if they’re being difficult, but sharing the details may put their mind at ease. Provide the basics on where you’re going, when you’re leaving, when you’re coming home and where you’re staying.
  • Don’t make many, if any, changes: Once your schedule is set, stick to it to the best of your ability. Making changes may anger your spouse, such as if your departure date moves and it impacts plans that they had.
  • Review your child custody agreement: An often overlooked step, making this mistake can cost you time and money. For example, if your agreement states that you’re not permitted to travel with your kids out of the country, don’t attempt to do so.
  • Keep an open line of communication: Not only should you stay in touch with your ex to let them know how things are going, but permit your kids to do the same. Don’t make a big deal out of this, as doing so will increase tension with your ex and put your kids in an awkward spot.

These basic steps allow you to more efficiently plan a summer trip with your kids after divorce. Things may be strange the first time around, as you’re used to vacationing with your ex, but it will gradually get better.

If your ex doesn’t like the idea of you taking a vacation with your kids, review your parenting and custody agreements to learn more about your legal rights. Don’t cancel your trip just because your ex is putting up a fight.
