  • Give yourself time to grieve: It’s okay to wonder what went wrong in your marriage. It’s okay to look back at the good times and think about what you could have done differently. As long as you don’t dwell on this, grieving can actually help relieve some stress and tension.
  • Form a support group: Going through divorce alone will eventually take a toll on you. Form a support group early on, such as by sharing your feelings with your family, friends and co-workers. There are people in your life who want nothing more than to help. You simply need to let them in.
  • Don’t continue to argue with your spouse or soon-to-be ex-spouse: You’ve decided to divorce so you don’t have to deal with one another any longer. There’s no point in arguing during the divorce process or once your marriage is formally in the past.
  • Think about the future: It’s difficult to see when you’re stressed out, but the future is bright. You’ll have full control over everything from how you spend your time to new hobbies to where you live.

Thinking you’ll go through the divorce process without any stress is unrealistic. Even if you’re ready to move on from your marriage, there will be plenty of details that stress you out and make you worry about the future.
